Partimage – disk backup software

Partimage is a console based utility which stores partitions to a image file providing that the filesystem in use is supported. Most Linux and Windows filesystems are supported. The image can be compressed with gzip or bzip2 to save disk space. Images can be split into multiple files spanning CDs or DVDs.

The partition can be restored if there is a problem on the partition (file system error, virus, error in data, …), from the image file. This software is commonly used to install the same image to multiple computers that have identical hardware over a network.

Partimage will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file. Partimage also works for large, very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition can be compressed with gzip down to 400MB.

Key Features

  • Support for the following filesystems: Ext2fs / Ext3fs, Reiser3, FAT16 / FAT 32, HPFS, JFS, and XFS.
  • Beta support for UFS, HFS.
  • Experimental support for NTFS.
