Leed – lightweight self-hosted RSS and Atom reader

Leed, short for Light Feed, is a minimalist self-hosted RSS and Atom aggregator designed for reading subscribed feeds through a web browser. It can be installed on a Linux web server and keeps feed retrieval separate from the interactive reading process.

Feed updates can be handled by scheduled jobs so that remote sources are fetched and processed before the user opens the reader. This reduces the delay associated with contacting every subscribed site during normal browsing. Its responsive interface is intended to work across desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Read RSS and Atom subscriptions through a self-hosted web interface.
  • Scheduled background processing can retrieve and update subscribed feeds automatically.
  • Feed synchronisation can be invoked locally using PHP.
  • Remote synchronisation can be triggered over HTTP using a synchronisation code.
  • Responsive layout adapts to desktop, tablet and mobile screen sizes.
  • Import subscriptions from OPML files created by other compatible feed readers.
  • Export subscriptions as OPML for migration or backup.
  • Uses SimplePie for parsing syndicated feed content.
  • Stores application information in a MySQL database.
  • Supports multiple interface languages.
  • Plugins can extend the core reader with additional functionality.
  • An associated Leed-market project distributes officially approved plugins.
  • Plugin hooks can add actions to individual feed entries.
  • Feed fetching is separated from normal page requests to keep interactive use responsive.
  • Supports displaying complete entries directly within the reader.
  • Cookie handling includes SameSite protection.
  • The installation is suitable for ordinary Linux web hosting as well as a personal server.
  • The interface is intentionally lightweight compared with larger web-based feed management systems.
