Gregorio – Tools for Typesetting Gregorian Chant

Gregorio is a free and open-source scorewriter software particularly useful for Gregorian chant in square notation. Gregorio is used by many Abbeys including St. Peters’s Abbey of Solesmes. The software has been in development since 2006.

The name gregorio comes from the imaginary Latin verb gregoriare, “singing gregorian chant”, in the first person.

Gregorio consists of three components:

  • gabc: a notation for writing Gregorian chant using ASCII characters;
  • GregorioTeX: a TeX style for typesetting scores;
  • gregorio: a utility to convert the gabc file to a GregorioTeX file.

As Gregorio uses LuaTeX to produce the final printed scores, you’ll need to obtain a TeX distribution which contains this engine. It’s recommended you use TeX Live, which offers an easy way to install the TeX document production system.

It does not offer a graphical user interface.
