Elemental is a native XML database designed for storing, managing and querying XML documents. It combines a NoSQL document database with an application platform built around XML technologies, including XQuery, XPath and XSLT.
Developed by Evolved Binary, Elemental is based on eXist-db and incorporates improvements to performance, concurrency and resource management. It is particularly suited to applications that work extensively with structured XML content, including digital publishing, document management and XML-based web services.
Rather than requiring XML documents to be converted into relational tables, Elemental stores them in their native format. Developers can query the documents directly, perform transformations and build database-backed applications using established XML standards.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Native XML storage – stores XML documents in collections while preserving their hierarchical structure.
- XQuery support – query, retrieve and process XML documents using the XQuery language.
- XPath integration – navigate XML document structures and select specific nodes and values.
- XSLT processing – transform XML documents into other structured formats and presentation output.
- Indexing – supports range and full-text indexes to improve the performance of XML queries.
- REST API – access documents, manage collections and execute queries through HTTP requests.
- XML:DB API – provides programmatic access to database resources and query functionality.
- RESTXQ support – develop RESTful web services directly in XQuery.
- Java integration – execute XQuery through a Java API with resource management and cleanup.
- Concurrency improvements – reduces locking contention during query execution and concurrent document editing.
- XProc integration – supports XQuery execution through the XML Calabash XProc processor.
- Security – provides user accounts and access permissions for controlling database resources.
- Cross-platform support – runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
