Sendmail is one of the longest-established mail transfer agents for Unix-like systems. It accepts messages from mail clients and other servers, determines how they should be routed and hands them to local or remote delivery mechanisms.
Its configuration system provides extensive control over address rewriting and mail routing. This flexibility helped make Sendmail enormously influential, although it also gives the software a steeper learning curve than many newer mail servers.
Sendmail continues to support contemporary mail-server requirements while retaining compatibility with long-established Unix mail infrastructure.
