biodiff is a terminal-based binary diff viewer.
It compares two files side by side in a hex view and uses alignment algorithms to keep similar regions lined up, padding missing bytes where needed. That makes it useful for inspecting differences in binaries, firmware images, and other non-text files where ordinary diff tools are not suitable.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Shows two binary files side by side in a hex view for direct comparison.
- Offers both unaligned and aligned views for examining contiguous data and matched byte regions.
- Uses bioinformatics-inspired alignment algorithms to keep similar parts of files in sync.
- Supports multiple byte representations including binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal, mixed ASCII/hex, braille, and Roman numerals.
- Includes right-to-left mode, horizontal and vertical split layouts, and ASCII and bar columns.
- Lets you adjust bytes per row and automatically determine width from visible or selected data.
- Provides search using text, regular expressions, and hexagex patterns.
- Can print diffs directly to the terminal in addition to its interactive interface.
