xdiskusage is a lightweight graphical utility for examining disk space consumption. It provides a visual representation of the storage occupied by files and directories, making it easier to identify areas of a filesystem that require attention.
The application is based on the design of xdu, a graphical disk usage viewer. It uses the standard Linux utilities du and df to collect information about disk usage and available storage.
Instead of displaying results solely as a text-based directory listing, xdiskusage represents filesystem contents using rectangular areas. The size of each area corresponds to the amount of storage occupied by that part of the directory tree.
Users can navigate the graphical display to investigate individual directories, move through the hierarchy and examine the relationship between parent directories and their contents.
The application can also process previously generated du output. This makes it useful when analysing data collected on another machine or when a filesystem scan has already been performed.
xdiskusage has modest resource requirements and a traditional graphical interface. It is particularly suitable for users who want a straightforward visualisation tool without the complexity of a more comprehensive system maintenance application.
