Transition is a graphical application for converting audio and video files into audio formats on Linux. It is designed for people who want to prepare recordings, music or extracted soundtracks without building FFmpeg commands or working through the controls of a full audio editor.
The workflow is centred on selecting a collection of source files, choosing the desired output settings and starting conversion. Different kinds of multimedia can be included in a job, so an audio-only source and a video containing a soundtrack can be processed from the same interface. It is equally suited to occasional single-file conversions and larger queues. Its adaptive design also accommodates narrower screens while keeping the conversion controls accessible.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Convert to Ogg Opus, Ogg Vorbis, MP3, FLAC and WAV to suit different storage, streaming and playback requirements.
- Handle large batches of input files rather than requiring each source to be converted individually.
- Extract the audio component of supported video files as well as converting existing audio recordings.
- Select the number of channels in the resulting audio file.
- Adjust output quality using settings appropriate to the chosen encoding format.
- Use smart quality handling to avoid increasing a lower-quality source’s settings unnecessarily; the behaviour can be disabled.
- Remember conversion preferences between sessions instead of requiring the same settings to be entered again.
- Use replacement mode when output should take the place of the original input files.
