SoX_ng is a command-line audio converter and processor based on SoX (Sound eXchange). It brings together sound-file conversion, editing, recording and analysis in one toolkit. The project continues the original SoX codebase while integrating fixes and enhancements from distribution packages and other development branches.
Its command-line approach makes SoX_ng particularly useful for repeatable jobs. Instead of opening recordings one at a time in an editor, you can describe the processing steps in a command or shell script and apply them consistently to multiple files. Conversion and effects can be combined in the same operation, limiting intermediate files. The native sox_ng command also allows the project to coexist with installations of the original SoX.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Read and write a wide range of audio formats, with additional codecs available through optional libraries and external tools.
- Resample recordings, change bit depth and adjust channel layouts to meet the requirements of different playback devices.
- Combine multiple inputs through mixing, merging or concatenation, or divide longer recordings into smaller output files.
- Apply effects including equalisation, compression, reverb, chorus, saturation, fades, pitch changes and noise reduction.
- Generate sine waves, other waveforms and noise signals for testing audio equipment or creating sound effects.
- Produce spectrogram images, audio statistics and loudness measurements without a separate graphical analysis application.
- Use play_ng and rec_ng to play or record audio directly through supported system audio devices.
- Chain effects together, use pipes in shell workflows and optionally process multichannel effects across several CPU cores.
