tg is a terminal Telegram client written in Python.
It presents chats and messages in a keyboard-driven interface designed for users who prefer working from a terminal. The client supports everyday messaging alongside media handling, voice messages, secret chats and desktop notifications. Configuration is a Python file, allowing users to change commands, colours, storage locations, external viewers and other behaviour.
This is free and unencumbered software released into the public domain.

- Send, reply to, edit, forward and delete messages, with support for selecting multiple messages.
- View message history, list contacts and display user status and profile information.
- Send pictures, documents, audio and video files directly from the terminal interface.
- View photos, videos, voice and video notes, documents, stickers and other downloaded media.
- Record and send voice messages, with ffmpeg available as an optional recording backend.
- Supports secret chats and creation of new groups or secret conversations.
- Pin or unpin chats, mark them read or unread, and mute or unmute conversations.
- Vi-style keybindings with numeric movement commands, arrow-key navigation and extensive message controls.
- Configurable external file pickers including ranger and nnn, with fzf integration for user selection.
- Mailcap integration lets different external applications open images, video, audio, HTML and text files.
- Desktop notifications can use dunst, terminal-notifier or another user-defined notification command.
- Automatic media downloading with configurable cache retention and download directory.
- Can use a custom TDLib library path and a configured local database encryption key.
- Installable from PyPI, source, Docker or the Arch User Repository.
