Scrutiny is a web-based application for monitoring the health of hard disks and solid-state drives. It presents SMART information in a dashboard, helping administrators identify potential storage problems and monitor changes over time.
The application uses smartctl from smartmontools to gather information from supported devices. Rather than simply displaying raw SMART attributes, Scrutiny highlights important indicators, tracks their history and evaluates readings against configurable warning thresholds.
Scrutiny is particularly useful for NAS systems, home servers and other computers containing multiple drives. Its web interface makes it possible to inspect storage health without relying exclusively on command-line tools, while its collection architecture supports monitoring drives attached to different systems.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Web dashboard – displays drive health information through a browser-based interface.
- Automatic device discovery – identifies supported storage devices using smartctl.
- SMART monitoring – collects health information from compatible hard disks and solid-state drives.
- Historical tracking – records SMART attributes over time to identify developing problems and unusual changes.
- Threshold monitoring – compares drive measurements against configurable warning and failure thresholds.
- Temperature monitoring – tracks drive temperatures and their historical behaviour.
- Drive information – displays device identity, capacity, model information and important health indicators.
- Alerting – sends notifications when configured conditions are met, using email, webhooks and supported notification services.
- Multi-host monitoring – supports separate collectors reporting storage information to a central monitoring service.
- Device configuration – permits overrides for drive types and devices that are not detected correctly.
- Collector error reporting – warns when SMART information cannot be collected successfully.
- Flexible scheduling – allows drive information to be collected periodically.
