Opencast – solution for automated video capture and distribution

Opencast (formerly Matterhorn) is open source software to produce, manage and distribute academic audio and video content, especially lecture recordings.

Opencast is an end-to-end software application that supports the scheduling, capture, managing, encoding and delivery of educational audio and video content.

The project is supposed to combine the individual solutions and focus the efforts and experience of different universities in one shared open product. The creation of a unified system with an open development process is projected to foster the exchange of educational content also. The Opencast project receives funding from the Hewlett Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Features include:

  • Provides specs for building your own capture agent to automatically record audio, video and VGA signal, and a sophisticated set of administration tools to manage recordings.
  • Configurable media processing workflow system provides a scalable set of services for dispatching processing jobs across multiple worker nodes. Services include:
    • Video encoding.
    • Metadata generation.
    • Scene detection.
    • Preview image generation.
    • Trimming and captioning.
    • Text analysis.
  • Publish recordings for both progressive download and streaming server, including a local search index. RSS/Atom feeds are available for integration with other systems, and coming soon, Matterhorn will be able to publish directly to iTunes U and YouTube.
  • Engage player can be used as a standalone application, or embedded inside of other applications such as blogs, wikis or content management systems.

  • JMX based monitoring.
