Fedora IoT – container-based Linux distribution for edge devices

Fedora IoT is a Fedora-based Linux distribution designed as a foundation for Internet of Things and edge computing deployments.

Rather than targeting conventional desktop use, it provides an image-based operating system for devices running workloads outside traditional data centres. The base system is managed using rpm-ostree, allowing operating-system changes to be deployed transactionally and rolled back if necessary.

Fedora IoT is intended to provide a relatively small, reliable host operating system while applications and services can be deployed using containers.

This is free and open source software.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
