DNSViz is a command-line tool suite for analysing and visualizing Domain Name System behaviour, with particular emphasis on DNSSEC. It gathers DNS query and response data, evaluates the resulting delegation and security relationships, and can turn the analysis into textual, machine-readable or graphical output.
The suite separates data collection from interpretation. A domain can first be probed and the raw results saved as JSON, then assessed or rendered later without repeating the network queries. This workflow is useful for troubleshooting live DNS configurations, examining DNSSEC validation chains, and testing proposed changes before they are deployed publicly. Stored probe data can also be reused to generate different forms of output without querying the target again.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Probes domains through configured recursive resolvers or directly against authoritative servers.
- Can follow delegation ancestry from the root and work with explicitly supplied nameserver names or addresses.
- Processes saved query data with a dedicated analysis stage that reports descriptions, statuses, warnings and errors.
- Accepts custom DNSSEC trust anchors when assessing authentication status.
- Produces graphical representations as images, Graphviz dot data or interactive HTML.
- Offers textual reporting suitable for direct command-line use and a compact dig-like query interface.
- Can analyse multiple domain names concurrently with configurable worker threads.
- Supports pre-deployment testing with local zone files or alternate delegation information, allowing DNS and DNSSEC changes to be checked before publication.
