Kooka – scan software

Kooka is an intuitive, easy to use open source scan and Optical Character Recogniton (OCR) suite.

Kooka has been the scan application of choice for the KDE project and is an official part of the KDE Graphics Package. However, Kooka has been dropped from KDE 4.

Kooka helps you to handle the most important scan parameters, find the correct image file format to save and manage your scanned images. It offers support for different OCR modules. Libkscan,a separate element of Kooka, provides a scan service for easy and consistent use to all KDE applications.

Character recognition is provided by the built-in text recognition program gocr.

Features include:

Scanning

• Scanner support using the SANE library. (SANE stands for “Scanner Access Now Easy” and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to image scanner hardware). Only a subset of the features that SANE provides are supported by Kooka.
• Handles the important scanner options like resolution, mode, threshold etc. in a friendly dialog.
• Preview and final scanning.
• Interactive and automatic scan area selection on a preview pane.

Image Storage

• Save assistant helps you to find the correct image format for your purpose and automatically creates a filename.
• Manages the scanned images in a tree view where the user can delete and export images (referred to as the Image Gallery, see the next section).

The Image Gallery

• A treeview organised place where your images are stored.
• Create and remove folders to organise your image collections.
• Intelligent zooming.
• Basic image manipulation functions like rotating, mirroring, cropping and more.
• Image printing in original and custom size.
• Correct handling of multipage TIFF files.
• Drag and drop with other KDE applications.

OCR

• Kooka supports GOCR, an open source ocr project.
• Kooka works with KADMOS, a commercial OCR/ICR toolbox.
• Kooka interfaces Ocrad, a Free Software OCR program.

KDE Scan Service

• The libkscan provides a user friendly scan service to all other KDE applications which want to use it..
• Supports KOffice and KView.
