rulc is a terminal calculator that combines interactive mathematical calculations with function plotting. It provides both a command-line interface and a text user interface, allowing users to evaluate expressions and investigate mathematical functions without leaving the terminal.
The program uses a read-evaluate-print loop (REPL) for interactive calculations. Expressions are parsed and evaluated immediately, making it useful for quick arithmetic, scientific calculations and experimenting with mathematical formulas.
Users can define variables and functions, reuse previously calculated values and visualise functions as graphs. The plotting interface also supports comparing multiple curves and identifying their intersections.
rulc is suitable for users who prefer terminal applications, particularly those who want an alternative to traditional desktop calculators with graphical plotting capabilities.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Provides interactive REPL, terminal user interface and direct expression evaluation modes.
- Supports arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation.
- Includes trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, logarithms, square roots and rounding operations.
- Provides mathematical constants including pi and Euler’s number.
- Supports user-defined variables and compound assignment operations.
- Allows users to define custom mathematical functions using expressions.
- Plots mathematical functions directly in the terminal interface.
- Supports configurable plotting ranges using numerical expressions.
- Displays up to five function curves simultaneously, with separate colours.
- Automatically scales graph axes to accommodate the plotted values.
- Calculates intersections between functions using numerical sampling and interpolation.
- Displays intersection coordinates and marks intersection points on graphs.
- Handles undefined function values and filters extreme values near asymptotes during plotting.
- Provides commands for clearing variables, functions, plots and calculation history.
- Accepts mathematical expressions through standard input for integration with shell scripts.
