ContainerSSH – launch isolated containers over SSH

ContainerSSH is an SSH server that launches containers on demand, providing users with isolated environments rather than direct access to the host operating system. Users connect using conventional SSH clients, while ContainerSSH handles authentication, container creation and communication with the resulting environment.

The software is designed for situations where temporary, reproducible Linux environments are preferable to conventional user accounts. Examples include training laboratories, development workspaces, practical demonstrations and controlled access to production systems.

ContainerSSH separates the SSH-facing service from the backend infrastructure. This allows administrators to integrate existing identity systems and determine how each user’s environment should be provisioned. The resulting architecture is particularly useful where environments need to be created dynamically, controlled through external policies and automatically reclaimed when they are no longer required.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Supports Docker and Kubernetes backends, allowing SSH connections to launch containers or Kubernetes workloads.
  • Supports password and public key authentication, together with OAuth2, OpenID Connect and Kerberos authentication mechanisms.
  • Authentication and authorisation webhooks provide integration with external identity services and access control systems.
  • Dynamic configuration webhooks allow container images, backend settings and other connection parameters to be selected according to the user.
  • Session auditing captures SSH activity for security analysis, troubleshooting and compliance, with support for storing audit data in S3-compatible storage.
  • Ephemeral container environments can be cleaned up automatically after disconnection, with persistent volumes available for retaining user data.
  • Supports deploying files into containers through authentication and configuration hooks.
  • Includes Prometheus metrics integration and health-check endpoints for monitoring deployments.
  • Supports X11 forwarding for applications requiring graphical access.
  • Can be embedded into Go applications, with interfaces for controlling the service lifecycle and extending its behaviour.
