git-spice is a command-line tool for managing stacked Git branches. A stack is a sequence of dependent branches, letting a larger change be split into smaller pieces that can be reviewed and merged in order. The program is designed to fit around a normal Git workflow, so developers can adopt stacked branches without replacing the tools and habits they already use.
A typical workflow creates one branch on top of another, submits the stack for review, synchronises with the remote repository after changes are merged, and then restacks the remaining branches on top of the latest base. The short gs command and compact command aliases keep these operations quick to invoke from a terminal.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Create and maintain ordered stacks of Git branches.
- Submit an entire stack or only selected branches with a single command.
- Create GitHub, Bitbucket, Gitea and Forgejo pull requests, plus GitLab merge requests.
- Synchronise a repository with remote changes and remove branches whose changes have already been merged.
- Restack dependent branches when their base changes.
- Edit stack structure while keeping branch relationships intact.
- Navigate quickly between branches in a stack.
- Operate completely offline with no external dependencies until an action needs to communicate with a remote repository.
- Use short command aliases for common branch, stack and repository operations.
- Adopt the tool incrementally instead of changing an existing Git workflow wholesale.
