GateSentry – filtering proxy and DNS server

GateSentry is a network content filtering system for homes and small networks. It combines DNS filtering, an HTTP/HTTPS proxy and a browser-based administration interface.

Policies can block categories and domains, maintain allowlists, enforce safe search, and apply scheduled rules to particular devices or proxy users. DNS filtering works at domain level, while proxying enables more granular URL and content filtering.

Linux also supports transparent proxying. With HTTPS inspection enabled and its CA certificate installed on clients, GateSentry can apply rules to URL paths, keywords and response content types.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Filter domains across a network with the built-in DNS server and downloadable blocklist categories.
  • Assign separate policies to devices or authenticated proxy users.
  • Block categories and domains while maintaining per-policy always-allowed domain lists.
  • Create ordered rules with domain, category, schedule and user scopes.
  • Enforce safe search for Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo and restricted mode for YouTube.
  • Proxy HTTP and HTTPS traffic, with transparent proxy support on Linux.
  • Inspect HTTPS traffic for URL, keyword and content-type rules when clients trust the GateSentry CA.
  • Review filtering decisions, statistics and discovered devices from the web dashboard.
  • Temporarily pause filtering, add exceptions, test policy decisions, and back up or restore configuration.
