7-Zip is a file archiver designed to provide high compression ratios and support for numerous archive formats. Its native 7z format uses LZMA and LZMA2 compression, with options for controlling dictionary sizes, compression levels and multithreading.
Although originally developed for Windows, 7-Zip also provides a native command-line version for Linux. The Linux application uses the same underlying compression technology and can create, extract and inspect archives without a graphical interface.
The software supports creating archives in several formats, including 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ and WIM. It can also extract many additional formats, including RAR, ISO, CAB and a range of disk image and filesystem formats.
For Linux users, 7-Zip is useful both as a general-purpose archiver and as a compression tool that can be incorporated into scripts and automated workflows.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- High compression ratios using LZMA and LZMA2 in the native 7z format.
- Creates and extracts 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ and WIM archives.
- Extracts many additional formats, including RAR, ISO, CAB, CPIO, RPM, DEB and filesystem images.
- Strong AES-256 encryption for 7z and ZIP archives.
- Multithreaded compression to take advantage of multicore processors.
- Adjustable compression methods, dictionary sizes, word sizes and compression levels.
- Solid compression to improve compression ratios when archiving related files.
- Split large archives into multiple volumes of configurable size.
- Test archive integrity without extracting all files.
- List archive contents and extract individual files or directories.
- Command-line operation suited to shell scripts and automated backup workflows.
- Cross-platform support – native Linux console application, with Windows and macOS versions also available.
