wasmCloud is a cloud-native platform for running WebAssembly applications across cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters and edge devices. It provides an environment for executing lightweight application components without tying them to a particular infrastructure provider.
The platform uses the WebAssembly Component Model and the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI). Applications declare the capabilities they require, while the runtime controls access to resources such as networking, storage and messaging.
wasmCloud combines development tools, a runtime and Kubernetes integration. This separation allows developers to work with portable components while administrators retain control over deployment, security and resource allocation. It is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation incubating project.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Run WebAssembly components using the Wasmtime execution engine.
- Capability-based security model that denies access to resources unless explicitly granted.
- Support for applications written in languages targeting WASI, including Rust, Go, TypeScript and Python.
- Wasm Shell (wash) command-line utility for creating, building and publishing components.
- Local development environment with automatic rebuilding and reloading through wash dev.
- Embeddable Rust runtime suitable for standalone and customised host environments.
- Kubernetes operator for managing wasmCloud hosts, workloads and related custom resources.
- Deploy application components using OCI registries.
- Host capabilities for HTTP, filesystem access, sockets and other WASI interfaces.
- Extensible plugin system supporting key-value storage, messaging, configuration and other services.
- NATS-based communication between cluster hosts and the control plane.
- Declarative deployment and management of workloads using Kubernetes resources.
- Helm chart for deploying the operator and runtime infrastructure.
- Integration with existing Kubernetes scaling, observability and access-control tooling.
- Support for running components across different infrastructure environments without rebuilding application logic for each host.
