NANO Emacs – clean and modular Emacs user interface

NANO Emacs is a modular set of configuration files intended to give Emacs a consistent, restrained and carefully designed visual environment while staying close to vanilla Emacs.

The project is based on design principles developed by Nicolas P. Rougier and deliberately avoids turning Emacs into a heavily layered distribution. Users can load the whole configuration for a coherent interface or copy only the modules they find useful into an existing setup. Its limited dependency footprint makes that selective approach practical.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Provides coordinated light and dark visual themes built around carefully selected colour palettes.
  • Defines a small set of fundamental faces from which the rest of the interface is derived.
  • Offers separate modules for layout, faces, colours, themes and interface behaviour.
  • Can be tested as a complete configuration without modifying an existing Emacs setup.
  • Modules can be incorporated individually into an existing personal configuration.
  • Provides configurable monospaced and proportional font families.
  • Controls frame margins, fringes and other layout details for a consistent presentation.
  • Includes an alternative header-line and modeline arrangement that adapts to editing context.
  • Provides a configurable splash screen for new sessions.
  • Includes sensible default settings while avoiding unnecessary behavioural changes.
  • Can preserve selected session information between runs.
  • Offers a compact set of optional key bindings for common actions.
  • Contains optional integrations for common Emacs packages without making them mandatory.
  • Includes specialised modules for writing, agenda, email and compact interface layouts.
