GemPy – construct three-dimensional geological models

GemPy is a Python library for constructing three-dimensional geological models.

The software uses an implicit representation approach to build complex geological structures from surface points and orientation measurements. It can represent folded stratigraphy, fault networks, unconformities and other relationships between geological units.

GemPy separates geological structures into ordered groups and elements, allowing the chronology and interaction of formations and faults to be defined. Models can be evaluated on several grid types and visualised in two or three dimensions using the companion GemPy Viewer package.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Constructs three-dimensional implicit geological models.
  • Uses surface points and orientation measurements as input data.
  • Imports geological data from CSV files.
  • Builds models directly from arrays and Python data structures.
  • Represents folded geological structures.
  • Models stratigraphic sequences and unconformities.
  • Supports fault networks and relationships between faults.
  • Models finite faults.
  • Organises geological units into ordered structural groups.
  • Encodes the relative chronological order of geological structures.
  • Evaluates models on regular, custom, centred and section grids.
  • Uses octree refinement to extract smooth geological surfaces.
  • Computes geological models at arbitrary coordinates.
  • Adds topography from files, arrays or structured subsurface grids.
  • Provides tools for adding, modifying and removing surface points and orientations.
  • Creates orientations from groups of surface points.
  • Generates gravity-gradient calculations.
  • Saves and restores geological models.
  • Integrates with GemPy Viewer for two-dimensional and interactive three-dimensional visualisation.
  • Includes tutorials and example geological models.
