Gammapy – analyse gamma-ray astronomy data

Gammapy is a Python package for analysing gamma-ray astronomy data. It builds on NumPy, SciPy and Astropy and provides a common framework for reducing, modelling and interpreting observations from high-energy astronomical instruments.

The software is used as a core library for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory’s science analysis software and is recommended by the H.E.S.S. collaboration for scientific publications. It is also used with observations from instruments including MAGIC, VERITAS and HAWC.

Gammapy represents prepared observations using datasets which can then be analysed individually or combined. Its modelling system supports spatial, spectral and temporal models, allowing astronomical sources and diffuse emission to be described using built-in models or user-defined alternatives. Models can be fitted to datasets through a common fitting and parameter interface.

The package supports map-based and spectral analysis as well as workflows involving event data, instrument response functions and source models. Higher-level estimators can derive scientific products such as flux points and maps from fitted datasets. Configuration can be performed through Python or YAML-based descriptions, which is useful when constructing reproducible analysis pipelines.

Gammapy integrates closely with the broader scientific Python ecosystem rather than attempting to provide an isolated environment. Its Astropy foundations supply units, coordinates and other astronomical infrastructure, while NumPy and SciPy provide the numerical foundations.

This is free and open source software.
