Betterbird is billed as a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird. It’s a soft fork of Mozilla Thunderbird. Soft fork means that it is closely following the Thunderbird Extended Support Releases (ESR).
Betterbird claims it improves on Thunderbird in a few days including additional features and bug fixes.
This is free and open source software.

I don’t see a compelling reason to use this over Thunderbird. Or am I missing something?
I agree, no good reason to use this fork.
The developer of Betterbird claims his fork adds some useful features. But don’t forget the maintainer is extremely bitter towards Mozilla; this is a hostile fork. He was banned from the Thunderbird Council, and banned for life from the Mozilla Community.
