Widelands – real-time strategy game

Widelands is an economic and military simulation game aiming for gameplay similar to Settlers II by BlueByte.

In this game, you start out on a small piece of land with nothing more than a few of useful resources. Using those, you can build yourself an empire with many thousands of inhabitants. On your way towards this goal, you will have to build up an economic infrastructure, explore the lands around you and face enemies who are trying to rule the world just like you do.

The map is shown in parallel perspective with 3-dimensional terrain. Buildings and units are animated. Realtime strategy game with emphasis on economy and transport

Like in warcraft-like games, you are the despot of an empire and want to harvest resources and get soldiers to get more power.

Unlike those games, this is a strategic game, not a tactic one, and the emphasis is not on war but on building your economy and the network of roads over which all wares need to be transported.

The game is set in a fantasy world, somewhere between the Middle Ages and the Roman Empire.

Features include:

  • Four Worlds (Tile Sets) (Greenland, Winterland, Blackland and Desert).
  • Three Tribes (Barbarians, Imperials and Atlanteans).
  • 5 playable single player (tutorial) missions (Barbarians and Imperials).
  • Maps for single and multiplayer mode.
  • Save and load of multiplayer games.
  • Play online.
  • Ability to build a settlement from scratch.
  • Basic military support (Attacking, Training, rudimentary defending, no conquering – only destroying).
  • A map editor, to build your own maps and campaigns.
  • Exploration.
  • Fog of war.
  • Sound effects.
  • Background music.
  • Adjustable simulation speed.
  • Translated to different languages.
