VolnOS is a general-purpose desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and built around Cinnamon. It presents Cinnamon in a Windows-style layout, with a conventional taskbar, Start-menu arrangement and familiar keyboard shortcuts.
The defining part of the distribution is its integrated AI assistant. Rather than functioning simply as a chatbot, the assistant has tools for examining and operating the computer. It can inspect logs, check network status, search files, manage software and settings, and perform other system tasks. Operations that alter the machine display the command that will be executed and require approval.
VolnOS also puts considerable emphasis on making Windows applications easier to run under Linux. Executable and installer files are associated with its Wine launcher so that supported Windows software can be opened directly rather than requiring the user to configure Wine manually.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
