TEAMGROUP T-FORCE G50 M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD 1TB Review

Summary

Is the TEAMGROUP T-FORCE G50 1TB a good buy?

For a DRAM-less NVMe, the TEAMGROUP T-FORCE G50 1TB is a capable PCIe 4.0 SSD that should work well in a laptop, mini PC, or desktop. Just make sure your motherboard has a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface or better. If you’ve only got a PCIe Gen3 x4 interface, the drive should usually work assuming NVMe support, but it’ll be limited to Gen3 speeds.

The G50 isn’t designed to be the fastest SSD on the market. There are quicker PCIe 4.0 drives and much faster PCIe 5.0 models. But speed is only part of the story. For many Linux users, the better question is whether a drive offers good performance, decent endurance, low-fuss installation, cool running, and sensible pricing. On that basis, the TEAMGROUP T-FORCE G50 1TB looks like a solid mainstream Gen4 SSD.

The obvious compromise is the lack of DRAM. For everyday Linux desktop use, that’s unlikely to be a problem. Typical desktop workloads don’t hammer random writes hard enough to make DRAM essential. But if you frequently write hundreds of gigabytes in one go, or use an SSD for heavy workstation scratch duties, sustained write performance matters more than the headline figures.

The G50’s endurance rating of 650TBW for the 1TB model is reasonable, and the 5-year limited warranty is welcome. The thin graphene heatsink is also a good fit for mini PCs and laptops, where clearance is often tight.
