optimus-manager – GPU switching on Optimus laptops

optimus-manager provides a solution for GPU switching on Optimus laptops (i.e laptops with a dual Nvidia/Intel or Nvidia/AMD configuration).

GPU offloading and power management with Nvidia cards are not properly supported on Linux. optimus-manager provides a workaround to this problem by allowing you to run your whole desktop session on the Nvidia GPU, while the Intel/AMD GPU only acts as a “relay” between the Nvidia GPU and your screen.

Only Arch and Arch-based distros are supported. This utility isn’t necessary on Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distros as Canonical developed a solution called nvidia-prime.

This is free and open source software.

Features include:

  • Only Xorg sessions are supported (Wayland is not supported).
  • Supports SDDM, LightDM, and GDM display manager.
  • It also works with other display managers but this requires manual configuration:
    • It uses Xorg (no Wayland)
    • It runs the script /usr/bin/prime-offload just after starting its display server for the login screen
    • It runs the script /usr/bin/prime-switch as root after the current user has logged out.
