Linux Distributions

Nova – desktop-oriented Linux distribution

Nova is billed as a Linux distribution made by Cubans and for Cubans. But you don’t need to speak Spanish to use this distro.

Nova is based on Ubuntu. The distro was originally based on Gentoo and Sabayon.

The project releases three different editions:

  • Escritorio (with GNOME Shell) which is aimed at machines with medium or high performance. It focuses on increasing users’ productivity with its friendly and usable desktop environment.,
  • Ligero – with a Nova-developed lightweight desktop called “Guano” aimed at workstations with low performance. It implements various optimization methods) and
  • Servidor – a variant for servers with the nova-manager tool through a console interface).

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
