lrzip, short for Long Range ZIP, is a compression utility designed to exploit repeated data that may be separated by large distances within a file. This approach can be especially effective with large datasets containing recurring sequences.
The software performs long-range redundancy reduction before applying a conventional compression backend. Users can select different algorithms depending on whether the priority is maximum compression density or faster processing.
lrzip can make substantial use of available system memory, which allows it to identify repetition across larger regions. It also offers multithreaded operation and optional archive encryption, making it a versatile alternative to conventional single-algorithm compression tools.
