Log Analyzers

logrifle – console-based viewer for large log files

logrifle is a console-based log file viewer written in Java. It is designed to help users investigate large log files without requiring a graphical desktop environment.

The application focuses on interactive examination of log messages, allowing users to narrow down large quantities of output and identify the information relevant to a particular problem. Its filtering model is particularly useful when investigating complicated application behaviour involving repeated messages or lengthy exception traces.

logrifle is primarily intended for Unix-like systems and can be used on remote servers through a terminal connection. It provides a practical alternative to combining numerous text-processing commands during log analysis.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Multiple log files – opens and merges several log files into one view.
  • Follow-tail mode – displays new messages as they are appended to files.
  • Nested filtering – supports regular-expression filters that progressively refine the displayed results.
  • Pattern highlighting – highlights messages matching configurable regular expressions.
  • Bookmarks – marks significant log entries for later inspection.
  • Movable focus – allows individual lines to be selected for operations such as bookmarking.
  • Stack trace collapsing – automatically condenses lengthy stack traces to reduce visual clutter.
  • Reusable analysis commands – reads commands from files so frequently used investigations can be repeated.
  • Large-file navigation – provides interactive tools for moving through extensive log output.
  • Headless operation – runs in a terminal without a graphical desktop environment.
