Command Schedulers

KCron – graphical front end to the standard cron utility

KCron is KDE’s graphical interface for managing tasks scheduled by cron. It lets users arrange for commands and shell scripts to run at specified times without having to create or edit crontab entries manually.

The application is useful for automating activities such as backups, file processing and routine system maintenance. Unlike a countdown timer, KCron works with the system’s cron daemon, so scheduled tasks can be executed independently of whether the graphical configuration interface is open. A working cron service is required.

KCron presents existing jobs and their associated environment settings in a single interface, making it easier to inspect and maintain scheduled commands.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Schedule commands by selecting months, days of the month, days of the week, hours and minutes.
  • Configure tasks to run at system startup using cron’s @reboot scheduling facility.
  • Display scheduled jobs with their commands, enabled status, descriptions and human-readable scheduling details.
  • Add descriptive comments to tasks and select executable files using a graphical file browser.
  • Enable or disable individual tasks without permanently deleting their scheduling information.
  • Run scheduled commands immediately for testing, without having to wait for the next scheduled execution.
  • Modify, delete, print, copy and paste scheduled tasks using the graphical interface.
  • Manage crontab environment variables, including PATH, HOME, SHELL and MAILTO, with options to enable or disable individual entries.
  • Inspect system-wide and other users’ scheduled tasks when running with appropriate administrative privileges.
