A linter examines source code for potential problems, questionable constructs and opportunities for improvement. Haskell developers have access to several specialist tools that extend beyond conventional linting, including source code formatters, dead-code analysers and formal verification systems.
These tools serve different purposes. HLint suggests simpler and more idiomatic expressions, while formatters such as Ormolu and Fourmolu apply consistent source code layouts. Weeder identifies unreachable declarations across module boundaries, while LiquidHaskell can verify program properties using refinement types.
Using these tools together can improve consistency, simplify maintenance and uncover problems that may otherwise go unnoticed. They are particularly useful in larger Haskell projects where code quality and maintainability become increasingly important.
