fooyin is a free and open source music player designed for Linux and other platforms. It stands out through its highly customisable interface, advanced library management and extensive audio-processing features. Its flexible layouts, DSP support, visualisations, internet radio, gapless playback make it one of the most capable music players available.
fooyin v0.12.0 introduces a built-in audio converter, three new visualisation plugins and several playback improvements.
Audio conversion
The new FFmpeg-based converter supports WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, WavPack, MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis and Opus.
Users can adjust bitrate, quality, compression level, sample format and dithering. Output files can be written beside the originals or to a chosen directory, with configurable filenames and overwrite handling.
The converter can preserve metadata, ratings, play counts and artwork. ReplayGain and fooyin’s DSP effects can also be applied during conversion. Settings may be saved as reusable presets.
Visualisations
The Spectrogram plugin displays frequency content over time, with mono and stereo modes, configurable scaling, FFT settings and colours.
The Oscilloscope plugin shows the audio waveform and offers adjustable duration, zoom, refresh rate and colours.
The optional projectM plugin adds MilkDrop-style animated visualisations. It can run inside the main layout, in a separate window or full-screen.
Other changes
PulseAudio is now supported as an output backend. fooyin can also resample audio automatically when an output device does not support the original sample rate.
Further improvements include faster Directory Browser and Properties dialog performance, asynchronous Tag Editor loading and refinements to the Radio Guide.
The release also fixes problems affecting playlists, ID3 tag encodings, fractional display scaling, extended tags and internet-radio metadata.
Summary
fooyin v0.12.0 is a strong update, although it offers little that appeals directly to an audiophile such as myself.
Its capable audio converter reduces the need for a separate transcoding utility, while the new visualisations make the player considerably more flexible and visually appealing.
I really hope the project’s promised documentation revamp materialises. The icing on the cake would be support for recording internet radio streams.
