Door Knocker is a small graphical diagnostic utility for checking which xdg-desktop-portal interfaces are available on a Linux system.
Portals provide standard desktop interfaces for operations such as opening files, capturing screens, accessing devices and interacting with other desktop services. Problems with a portal backend can therefore surface as application features that unexpectedly fail. Door Knocker provides a straightforward way to inspect the available interfaces without manually querying D-Bus or studying service logs.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Checks the availability of interfaces exposed through xdg-desktop-portal.
- Presents portal status in a graphical interface rather than requiring D-Bus command-line tools.
- Helps diagnose desktop integration problems involving missing or incorrectly configured portal backends.
- Shows both available and unavailable portal interfaces for easier comparison.
- Useful when troubleshooting screen casting, file chooser integration and other portal-dependent functionality.
- Provides a quick sanity check after changing desktop environments or portal backend configuration.
- Works on Linux desktops using the standard portal infrastructure.
- Uses GTK4 for its graphical interface.
- Uses libadwaita widgets and adapts well to different window sizes.
- Supports Wayland as well as fallback X11 operation.
- Has a deliberately narrow scope, making it useful as a dedicated diagnostic tool.
- Requires no complicated setup or configuration before checking the system’s portal interfaces.
- Includes translated interface strings for a wide range of languages.
