Valentina – cross-platform pattern making program

Valentina is a cross-platform pattern making program which allows designers to create and model patterns of clothing.

This software allows pattern creation, using either standard sizing tables or an individual’s set of measurements. It blends new technologies with traditional methods to create a unique pattern making tool.

Valentina is free and open source software.

There’s a fork of Valentina called Seamly2D. Both programs are under active development.

Features include:

• Measurements:
  • Contains dimensions of various pattern making systems.
  • Dimensions are grouped (height, leg, etc.), and each group is assigned a letter.
  • Each measure has a number within this group.
  • Each measurement has a different name based on anatomical points. This allows the meaningful translation of the measurements into any language.
• Draw mode is designed to allow easy adjustment of a pattern to suit particular wearers. It is therefore entirely formula-based, where the simplest formula is a set figure
• Detail mode. This mode is where the actual pattern is created. It offers various tools:
  • Seam allowance – create the basic outline of the pattern piece.
  • Union – takes 2 pattern pieces and joins them into 1 piece.
  • Piece path – select other details like internal paths or custom seam allowances to a pattern piece.
  • Pin – places a pin in a pattern piece.
  • Insert Node – add nodes to the pattern detail.
  • Creating Details – set the preferences for a pattern piece.
• Layout mode – a layout image contains the final version of your selected pattern pieces as they appear in Detail Mode. It does not include internal hatch marks, points, or point labels.
• Support for keyboard shortcuts.
• Cross-platform support – runs under Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
