Tears – Rust framework

Tears is a Rust framework for building terminal user interface (TUI) applications using The Elm Architecture (TEA). Built on Ratatui, it offers a type-safe and functional approach to managing application state, messages, updates, views, and side effects.

The framework takes an async-first approach with commands and subscriptions for handling terminal events, timers, operating system signals, and custom event sources. Optional features add WebSocket communication and HTTP querying and mutation.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Uses The Elm Architecture for predictable application structure and state management.
  • Async-first design with commands for performing side effects.
  • Subscriptions handle terminal events, timers, signals, and custom event sources.
  • Pure update logic makes applications straightforward to test.
  • Built on Ratatui and provides access to its widget ecosystem.
  • Leverages Rust’s type system for safer TUI development.
  • Optional WebSocket support for real-time bidirectional communication.
  • Optional HTTP support with querying, mutations, caching, and invalidation.
