LumaOS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution built around Niri, a scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor. It aims to provide a cohesive desktop experience that combines keyboard-driven window management with a carefully coordinated visual design.
Unlike traditional tiling window managers that divide the available screen into fixed arrangements, Niri places windows in a horizontally scrolling workspace. This allows users to organise multiple applications without continually resizing or rearranging them.
LumaOS combines Niri with a selection of desktop utilities and custom applications, all following a consistent deep-space aesthetic. The distribution is aimed primarily at users interested in scrollable tiling who prefer a preconfigured environment rather than assembling the necessary components themselves.
It uses Ubuntu as its foundation and retains the familiar APT software management system. A graphical installer is provided for setting up the distribution.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
