SparkyOS onUSB is a portable Linux distribution designed to run directly from a USB flash drive without requiring installation on a computer’s internal storage. It allows users to carry their operating system, applications, settings and personal files between compatible computers.
Developed by the SparkyLinux team, the project takes a different approach from the Debian-based SparkyLinux distribution. Its Arch-based edition provides a lightweight Xfce desktop and access to Arch Linux repositories and the Arch User Repository (AUR) through Yay.
Unlike conventional live Linux systems, SparkyOS functions as a fully installed operating system on removable storage. Software installations, system updates and changes to personal files are retained between sessions. The distribution uses a rolling release model, allowing users to maintain their portable environment without repeatedly downloading replacement system images.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
