Pinot – D-Bus service

Pinot is a D-Bus service that crawls, indexes and monitors your documents.

The software has a GTK-based user interface that enables to query the index built by the service or your favourite Web engine, and display and analyze the results. It is also supplied with other console based tools.

D-Bus activation makes sure the service is running whenever one of its methods is invoked by any consumer application.

Features include:

  • Metasearch: query a variety of sources including Web-based search engines.
  • Advanced queries (probabilistic search, boolean filters, wildcards, ranges on date, time and size).

  • Insensitive to diacritics (accents).
  • Searching while indexing.

  • Results lists export.
  • Dynamic document summaries.
  • Crawl and index the directories you choose.
  • D-Bus interface for easy integration with other applications, eg Deskbar Applet, Catfish.
  • No dependency on GNOME or KDE.
  • Internal support for common file types:
    • Plain text.
    • HTML.
    • XML.
    • mbox, including attachments and embedded documents.
    • MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC.
    • JPEG.
    • Common archive formats (tar, Z, gz, bzip2, deb).
    • ISO 9660 images.
  • The following document types are supported through external programs:
    • PDF (pdftotext required).
    • RTF (unrtf required).
    • OpenDocument/StarOffice files (unzip required).
    • MS Word (antiword required).
    • PowerPoint (catppt required).
    • Excel (xls2csv required).
    • DVI (catdvi required).
    • DjVu (djvutext required).
    • RPM (rpm required).
  • Query remote indexes.

  • Supports Sherlock and OpenSearch Description plugins.
