Lunar Linux is a source-based Linux distribution that compiles software locally, allowing users to tailor packages to their system and select build options to suit their requirements. The project describes itself as a distribution for users who want a flexible system built from source without making installation unnecessarily difficult. Lunar Linux.
Software is handled by Lunar’s own package management system. Packages are known as modules and their build definitions are stored in the Moonbase repository. The lin command installs modules and resolves dependencies, while lunar update updates the Moonbase and rebuilds software where required.
What separates it somewhat from other source-based distributions is the installation approach. The current daily ISO contains the complete core Moonbase with those modules already built, so the initial installation can be completed quickly; subsequent software is then built from source in the normal Lunar way.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses.
