Emaki – Arch-based Linux distribution with niri

Emaki is an Arch Linux-based distribution built around a customised version of niri, a scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor. It combines niri with a Quickshell-based desktop featuring translucent panels, an application launcher, dock, notifications and integrated login and lock screens.

The distribution has a distinctive pixel-art aesthetic, including an animated landscape wallpaper that scrolls with workspaces. It also provides graphical applications for system settings, software installation and updates.

Emaki includes a graphical installer with support for Btrfs snapshots, disk encryption and installation alongside Windows. System updates can be rolled back through the GRUB boot menu. The distribution supports Secure Boot on compatible UEFI systems.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
