Dogtag PKI is an enterprise-class public key infrastructure platform built around a collection of specialised certificate and key management services. It is intended for organisations that need more than basic certificate issuance and want to deploy a broader infrastructure covering certificate status, key recovery and token management.
Its architecture divides PKI responsibilities into separate subsystems. Administrators can therefore deploy the components appropriate to a particular environment instead of treating certificate management as a single monolithic service.
Dogtag is suited to centralised environments where certificates and cryptographic keys must be administered according to organisational policies. It can form the basis of relatively sophisticated deployments involving multiple authorities, replicated services and protected key storage.
Dogtag’s breadth makes it more appropriate for substantial PKI installations than for users simply looking to create a small local certificate authority.
