CatosTV – Arch-based Linux distribution for TVs

CatosTV is an Arch Linux-based distribution designed to turn ordinary PCs into home entertainment systems. It provides a television-friendly interface that can be operated without a conventional keyboard or mouse, making it suitable for mini PCs and older desktops connected to large-screen displays.

The distribution uses a custom interface written in Rust, running on a Wayland-based environment. Rather than presenting a traditional desktop, CatosTV provides a home screen with applications, recently used programs and media playback controls.

CatosTV brings together Linux applications, Android TV software and media streaming services within the same interface. It includes Catfyn, a dedicated Jellyfin client, and supports popular media players, streaming applications and games.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
