AlgaOS is a Gentoo-based Linux distribution aimed at people with little or no previous Linux administration experience. It keeps Gentoo underneath, but places a managed layer on top so routine tasks such as updating the system and recovering from problems can be handled without requiring users to understand Portage from the outset.
The project deliberately separates its beginner-oriented workflow from the underlying Gentoo system. Experienced users can administer AlgaOS as a more conventional Gentoo installation, but upstream warns that doing so can make its automatic updater unsuitable because that tool expects the distribution’s supported package selection and configuration. This gives newcomers a controlled path while leaving room to move towards standard Gentoo administration later.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
