Natural Language Processing

Apache cTAKES – clinical natural language processing platform

Apache cTAKES (clinical Text Analysis and Knowledge Extraction System) is a natural language processing platform for extracting structured information from clinical documents. It helps researchers and healthcare organisations analyse unstructured text such as patient notes, radiology reports and discharge summaries.

The software combines rule-based processing, dictionaries and machine learning techniques to identify medical concepts and their relationships. It can recognise clinical terminology and associate extracted information with standard medical vocabularies, making the results more useful for subsequent analysis.

Apache cTAKES uses a modular architecture that allows different components to be assembled into processing pipelines. It is particularly suited to clinical research, information extraction and applications that need to interpret large collections of medical narratives.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Extracts medical concepts from clinical notes, radiology reports and discharge summaries.
  • Recognises symptoms, diagnoses, medications, procedures and anatomical references.
  • Maps recognised concepts to standard medical terminologies such as SNOMED CT and RxNorm.
  • Supports sentence detection, tokenisation and part-of-speech tagging.
  • Provides named entity recognition using dictionary lookup and machine learning.
  • Identifies negation, uncertainty and other contextual attributes of clinical concepts.
  • Supports temporal expression recognition and extraction of clinical events.
  • Provides components for analysing relationships between medical concepts.
  • Uses Apache UIMA for constructing and executing analysis pipelines.
  • Allows processing workflows to be configured through Piper specifications.
  • Includes graphical utilities for submitting documents for analysis.
  • Provides a Python Bridge to Java for integration with Python workflows.
  • Supports healthcare research applications using clinical terminology and structured annotations.
