Blarock – simple music player

Linux offers a huge array of open source music players. And many of them are high quality. I’ve reviewed the vast majority for LinuxLinks, but I’m endeavoring to explore every free music player in case there’s an undiscovered gem.

Blarock caught my attention as its first release is was available on Flathub.

Installation

I evaluated the software in Manjaro. There’s a Flatpak available which I installed via Pamac’s GUI (but it’s just as easy to install it from the command-line).

Installing Blarock

It looks like the Flatpak has subsequently been deleted on Flathub but I’m not sure why. The source code is available so you should be able to build the software.

In Operation

The program scans your music library and automatically detects albums. The music needs to be stored in ~/Music

Playing an album is straightforward if a mite unintuitive.

The software has automatic playlist management with options to automatically add new tracks and automatically remove previous tracks.

Some of the functionality is not currently working.

Summary

Blarock is not a candidate by a long chalk to be included in my roundup of the finest graphical music players. But that’s not really surprising considering its very early stage of development.

I’ll be keeping an eagle eye on its development though and will report my findings.
