Doomsday Engine – Doom / Heretic / Hexen port with enhanced graphics

The Doomsday Engine is an enhanced Doom source port, based on the source code of id Software’s Doom and Raven Software’s Heretic and Hexen.

The purpose of the project is to create versions of Doom, Heretic and Hexen that feel the same as the original games but are implemented using modern techniques such as 3D graphics and client/server networking.

A lot of emphasis on the project is placed on creating good-looking graphics.

Its hardware-accelerated engine supports 3D models, object and movement smoothing, shadows, dynamic lighting, and other features. It also includes XG line and sector types for editing extensions, as well as a built-in master server games browser (launcher).

  • Hardware-accelerated 3D graphics (OpenGL) and sound effects.
  • 16-player multiplayer over LAN or the internet.
  • Dedicated mode for servers.
  • Dynamic lighting and shadow effects.
  • 3D models and particle effects.
  • Uses Quake’s MD2 format and custom DMD format.
  • 3D model sky models and skyboxes.
  • Map object (actors, monsters, missiles, etc.) movement smoothing.

  • Smart texture filtering.
  • Dynamic light effects and lens flares.
