Volla Phone Quintus running Ubuntu Touch: Pre-installed apps

Before delving into some of the Ubuntu Touch applications available in the OpenStore, let’s first explore the apps already present on the Volla Phone Quintus running Ubuntu Touch, a copylefted libre mobile operating system originally developed by Canonical, but now maintained by the UBports community.

I’ll look at each of the installed apps in turn.

That’s not actually a complete list as it doesn’t include the web browser, Morph Browser. I’m not sure why the Installed Apps listing doesn’t show the web browser. Let’s talk about that first.

Morph Browser

Morph Browser is a lightweight web browser based on the Qt WebEngine and using the Lomiri UI components. WebEngine is a stripped down Chromium based engine.

There’s lots to like about this web browser on the Volla Phone. The web browser is extremely fast at rendering pages. Websites look excellent courtesy of the phone’s large 6.78 inch display and 1080 x 2400 resolution.

The downside with the web browser is playback of videos. It lack the fluidity I’d expect. I tried a variety of sites including YouTube, BBC iPlayer, and others. This isn’t a criticism of the phone’s hardware. The Volla Phone CPU and GPU are more than sufficient to render video file with ease. Hopefully this issue will be ironed out with a future release of the web browser or the new version of Ubuntu Touch coming this month.
